mario frangoulis . the oprah campaign

i've been a fan of mario frangoulis for about a year. i have yet to see this global miracle grace the tv screens of america. he's not been on oprah yet. he hasn't been profiled on any latenight talk show or news magazine. he hasn't been touched by vh1, the channel for graduates of mtv. what is going on!?!

if this is your introduction to mario frangoulis, i am proud to be the first place on the web where you can experience him.

he's just recently released his new album, follow your heart, this past february and is on a worldwide tour that has included the sheldon concert hall, ny city center as well as the The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

the only network to feature his live concert, sometimes i dream, on tv is pbs. come on american network execs, we can do better than this.

here is the direct email link to oprah's show producers. we need to get mario frangoulis on oprah's show. take the time daily or once a week to write in and voice your reasons why oprah should welcome mario to america like no other host can. just click this paragraph now to get sent on over to OPRAHHH'S EMAILLLL!

he currently has 2 official websites. mariofrangoulis.com, for an english audience. mariofrangoulis.gr, for a greek audience. the english version offers new content whereas the greek version offers past content not found elsewhere.

recently cnn dot com just wrote a brillant, better than i ever could, article all about mario frangoulis! check it out, Mario Frangoulis' 'Garden' in spring.

for those not wanting to read the entire article, here we find out that mario has a new athens album in production entitled 'garden of hopes'. he's also perform with the baltimore symphony at meyerhoff hall, opened a baseball game singing the national anthem and plans to end his first round of solo performances on june 1st. damn.

in the same cnn article we discover that his new athens album is very personal, a moody and moving collection of new music the singer says took four years to produce. at the age of 36, mario is now coming up on a 16 year career! he's also fluent in Italian, French, English and Greek, and also sings in Spanish. wow.

and damn it, an audience recently in new york city got to hear 2 new songs from his unreleased album. they immediately came to a shuddering standstill when mario gave them a wrenching rendition of Lucio Dalla's vaulting ballad, Caruso. damn those lucky people!

now that his U.S. tour has ended, mario has returned to athens for a new international summer tour. here is his final quote in the cnn article. "Everything is in this new new album. It's a goodbye to the last century, hello to the new one. You have to express the hopes of your soul, and that's what my music is about. Like the title of the CD: Call it a 'garden of wishes' or a 'garden of hopes.' It's simply about what it means to be human."

for even more information on mario frangoulis, check out this 2 page write up.

what's not so shocking to me, but maybe to you, is that on amazon.com, his live performance dvd, sometimes i dream, has 24 5-star positive reviews. everyone loves this dvd!

amazon.com reviewer chowchowma says...
"This might well be one of the very best music DVDs you'll ever feast eyes on. It is definitely worth the price at any price! Mario Frangoulis' enthusiasm and his love for singing is so genuine, heartfelt, passionate and contagious, that you'll find it impossible to feel down while watching/listening to this recording."

amazon.com reviewer roberto antonacci "rob" says...
"When you get your DVD look at the faces in the public. They are ecstatic. Many women are literally CRYING, out of the power of his voice, his lyrics, his orchestration. Tears in the eyes of the public are the best testimony of the greatness of this concert. I just hope there will not be too much wait until I can attend a live concert here in the US.

This is music that will empower your soul. Not only Mario Frangoulis voice is spectacular, but his stage presence takes his music to new heights. He has charisma. He is the show. No need for "artsy" settings. Mario Frangoulis singing his hearth out, beautiful lyrics, a great orchestra. With songs like "Vincerò, Perderò", "Non Sarà", "Buon giorno principessa", my favorites, he unleashes such an emotional power that you will feel yourself soaring to the sky. Or, at least, this is my case. I first watched the live concert on T.V., then I ran to order the CD album. Now, a few days ago I discovered the DVD. Terrific sound and image quality. If you love music, but specially if you "live" the music you listed to, this is a must have. God bless music."

please purchase the dvd today anywhere online or in stores today!

my campaign gets noticed! by none other than arjan writes! oh oprah, if i have to bug you all summer long... i'll have mario on your show somehow, someway. there must a queen in chicago who knows the woman, get her the dvd! i feel as if she's untouchable by me so i need those who can get to her to give her my website, guytvblog.com!

mario frangoulis biography + accomplishments.

what the world needs now is a little more frangoulis. attending the prestigious guildhall school of music and drama in london and the verdi academy in busseto, greece has this sensuous tenor bringing back romance and poignant emotion to classical contemporary music.

mario frangoulis, born in africa and raised in athens, greece by his extended family, has dominated the broadway stages of the world. his most notable performance to date is the role of achilles in the trilogy of achilles, which was performed for the first time in the ancient amphitheatre of epidaurus in greece. he's also played 'danny zouko' in an athens production of grease singing both in english and greek as well as the role of 'marius' in les miserables, part of a national tour. in the midst of his theatrical career, he ventured out into a solo artist project gaining experience and later accomplishing his first platinum album.

with his name and voice gathering an immense following, sony music quickly signed him as an exclusive artist. and this all happened before the autumn of '98.

recently he's been seen in the original mgm musical portrait of american songwriter cole porter, de-lovely, where he is also featured on the soundtrack album. he sings alongside lara fabian and starred among a cast that includes natalie cole, sheryl crow, diana krall, robbie williams, ashley judd and jonathan price. impressive work.

new american fans can now purchase his live dvd sometimes i dream. you can also purchase his past album by the same name. great for gifts to those who appericate refined music and international voices.

some time ago, mario conducted an interview with jazz weekly where he talks about his family, his theater attributes and his voice. here we find out he was separated from his parents when he was only four and his mother's sister raised him in greece. he's quoted in saying, "i truly had a wonderful childhood with my foster parents, my mother's sister. she's been amazing. she introduced me to classical singing. she kept me going at times when I was feeling very low. we're a very united family."

unfortunately, he lost his foster mother to breast cancer and soon after, his foster father, a difficult time for him. both irreplaceable. he says, "i want to live by their example."

i believe he is an international bachelor, but one can be wrong about this. most international stars keep very private affairs from the public eye.

this is your proper introduction to mario frangoulis. venture to his official website to purchase his new album, follow your heart, online or in stores.

We would love to see Mario on Oprah! He's a very talented (some say raw talent) singer. And he has a personality that goes with his talent. Everyone who meets him after a performance automatically falls in love with him! Oprah will be the first lucky host to have him on her show. What a perfect venue to introduce him to the US along with being on PBS stations. We want more Mario!

I bought a new Mario's CD at a Greek Festival this weekend and it is wonderful as it is ALL in Greek! Problem is I don't speak or read Greek and I am dying to find out what the lyrics are. I'm having difficulty finding this particular CD anywhere on the internet which makes me think it has only been released in Greece. The cover is a head shot with him dressed in a black t-shirt and orange colored windows behind him. Can anyone help me??

To Debbie

Lyrics from the last Mario Frangoulis'Cd:
"O kipos Ton efhon"

1. δρόμοι του ουρανού (Dromoi tou ouranou )
Welkin walks

If man had wings
His mind would get afar
His days even farther
Albeit time, the great dictator
Would still hunt us
The day, would be sea high.

Until he got to the mountains
With wings wide open
He would tire to be alone
The heart would wish again
To be with a chosen one
To lighten the distance.

He flew over the mountains
With his open wings
Disappeared like an arrow
And as the rain rested
The start of the cycle
Was born from its end.

If man had wings
His world would be high up
The eyes would be rejoicing
But again, the heavens’ paths
Like the line inside the palm
Would change all boundaries.

2. τα περιττά (Ta peritta)

The superfluous

Scrumptious night is what remains
Netting weaved by shade
I embraced it and dreamed
I was my own star
and was healing me.

Heavy dust is what remains
Life covered by vacant sheets
Rust that leisurely dressed the body
Captured speech in foreign lips.

Should the heart covet
far afield to go
It needs not much,
the loads choke it
Become the wind
to pass the years by
Not to burden life
With the superfluous.

The memory ditched what remained
Eternal peace was attained
Vacant my years with what remains
Gaze on a waiting sea.

3. οι αποσκευές* (Oi aposkeves)

The baggage

Along I carried you always
Whenever I wandered away from you
In an alien night
To my life one goodnight
To live afar but near you
To be by you.

You were my baggage
In my travels far afield
When my flights brought me back
All the alike were new.

A slice of sky
I longed for
I had time enough to say I missed you
And I was shattered
I saw two clouds here
That carried me by you
by you
At all times I carried you along
Whenever I toddled off
In a fresh page
So that my homecoming had a map
To feel inside your arms
To be by you.

You were my baggage
In my travels far afield
When my flights brought me back
All the alike were new.

4. ο κήπος των ευχών (O kipos ton efhon )

Garden of wishes

Within the garden of wishes
The years are stark trees
The fruits fell by themselves
To sink life deep in the ground
So that when spring comes, it finds
Fertile earth.

Within the garden of wishes
The seeding is halted by frost
A card is veiled by fate
Therefore whichever game is played
A card is missing from the pack even now
Within the garden of wishes
The smell lingers
From the poets’ deep sleep
The ground is soaked.

Within the garden of wishes
The century takes a turn
The future will make a prayer
To be saved from itself
For an instant to release
The imperishable body.

5. μικρός πρίγκιπας (Mikros prigkipas )

The little prince

If I could fit
In your tiny planet
If you were to beckon me
So that sorrow wouldn’t have you.

My good old self
I would leave behind
Your heart’s veiled sky
I would breathe.

On your remote star
My hand to hold tight
Sleep well my little prince
I will stay here with you.

Should you ask me to come
On your tiny star
If I could see
The parts of your heart.

I would conquer the ego
That keeps me bound here
To see a world
That can fit both of us.

6. Μαγικό Βουνό* (Magiko vouno(with Manos Lidakis)

Enchanted mountain

The enchanted mountain
The treasure of the Alchemist
Once two friends were seeking
The bliss to share between them.

Jointly off they set
But soon they turned into enemies
The one was hunting for gold
The other for the water of immortality.

Never ask the stars
What is to become of us
Which the dream you owe to
The path is the path of the heart
Whatever you love most
Seek it here.
The enchanted mountain
The treasure of the Alchemist
Two friends once were seeking
To get rid of their sorrows.

Life brought about the split
Both West and East
One discovered a secret
The other just found a mountain.

7. ένας χάρτινος ήλιος (Enas hartinos ilios )

A paper sun

A paper sun
will rise tonight
So as to change
my tiny world
My heart will run away
and a kiss
Will seek
On your lips.

A paper sun
tall will arise
My own wings
could put on fire
Should the night score up
a silent fall
To track you down in the deep
I have vowed.

Just another step
Life awaits
Akin to you
Whatever is left behind me
If it is lost in dust
I do not care

8. Αγία Πετρούπολη - Παρίσι μετ’ επιστροφής

(Agia petroupoli/Parisi met'epistrofis )
St. Petersburg – Paris return

The human snake slowly advanced
To capture the great night
The laughter of the vain was heard again
Sometimes a ghost, sometimes a moon.

Time was retreating so the mind prevailed
Fate was detaining the hopes
Wilder times were offered next
Experience is filled with desolation.

Many a banner was erected by this grief
Many a victory celebrated defeats
How fast this wheel turned
So the carrions could feast on myths.
Rolling the stones atop the mountain
Turning around, to chase him
A Prometheus bound with a midget self
His boundaries unable to contain him.

Feet nailed on the ground
To see the sky all his life long
And an old memory becomes an urge
That he deserves not such life.

9. Χαραμάδα (Haramada)

Crevice

From such a tiny crevice
Picture the light coming through
Consider the world stretching out
At the mind’s sunshine.

Envisage a hope enduring
Wars and threats
Imagine our life getting the dream
Merely by wishing.

Dawn approached in a far land
Bonding us as a celebration
Our dreams were glittering
In a far-off spot.

Our sight was set not here
Dawn drew near and we held back
The heart ordered us elsewhere
To gain land for the comeback.
From such a tiny crevice
Spring sneaks up
A tiny conch my soul
The wave forgets the years.

From such a tiny crevice
Picture the light coming through
Consider the world stretching out
At the mind’s sunshine.

10. γκρίζα σύννεφα (Griza sinnefa)

Bleak clouds

Those bleak clouds
At the edge of the river
Are the conserved tears
Of the black prince.

Are the clothes left behind
By a girl one night
Before the wind whisked her away
And hid her in the dream.

Oh, how my day sleeps
It blooms amongst the blossoms
When it awakens it’s far away
And I’m a stranger to it.

Those bleak clouds
Silver-lined by grief
Are the wings of love
When it is not around.

Those bleak clouds
Are dashing birds
Are wakeful spirits
Now homeless.

They are the bitter flowers
And all the sky’s blooms
Are the never fading wreaths
In the sorrows of parting.

11. το θαύμα (To thavma)

The miracle

With his eyes shut
The years parade by
Like a defeated army
Arranging battles
Afresh in his mind
Smoke and captured pawns.

With his eyes shut
Whatever he seeks
A miracle to turn around the lot
Otherwise his whole life
To live once more
To heal the latent wound.

Days passed by
A river deep
And the miracle didn’t come
And in its waters
Another life
Slipped by before he caught it.

With his eyes shut
He returns to the past
His father atop the stairs
He is lacking the courage
To go far away
To put away
the «musts».

With his eyes shut
Whatever he seeks
A miracle to turn over the lot
Otherwise his whole life
To live once more
To heal the latent wound.

12. δίδυμοι έρωτες (Didimoi erotes)

Twin loves

As the sand tires the eyes
The town emerges again
As from a lengthy disease
To feast off the light of the desert.

It’s the town where illusions feast
The land of twin loves
For those working out their souls there
Sunrise is late in their dreams.

Do not talk
To give meaning to silence
Do not look
I am you in the glass.

My own heart
Bends to the sea
To see you in its waters.

Like nomads travel on
The lovers who loved beyond
Asking the flame which burns them
Where does their love live.

As the eyes are tired by sand
The town emerges again
It breads the perfect lie
That again will simulate life.

13. χρώματα πήρα και καμβά* (Hromata pira ke kamba)

I took colours and canvas

Colours and canvas I took
To paint your picture
Borrowing colour from the sky
As an angel to dress you.

Colours and canvas I took
Enchanted dreams
And painted you holding all the stars
in your arms

My heart’s a flaming red sun
Light blue will be the wind
My glance a green sea
And you’ll be my dream.

Day will embroider the night
With the light of my love
Many a star with your features
the sky will scatter

Colours and canvas I took
Dyed dreams
Keeping the keys to your heart
Like precious portraits.

14. το καλοκαίρι (To kalokeraki)

The summer

Eyes telling lies
Words were birds
Flew over to other glances
Along with the south wind.

Two waves lingered on
At the stairs of time
Like traces of footsteps
Which went forth into afar.

The summer that this year
Took so long to come
Was lost into your eyes
Searching for a sea.

Like passing clouds went by
A night, two silences
Did not even get close
For lives to shine.

Two waves lingered on
At the stairs of time
Like traces of footsteps
Which went forth into afar.

15. Νησιά (Nisia)

Islands

Like lands that once were one
Like islands our lives are separated
How can I travel to you
How can you reach me lacking sails.

Each on his own
His life, his own isle
My darling it’s late
All over the earth.

The waves smash up
The frail vessels
My darling, all our life
It’s just a sea.
Humans – islands
Moored at land
Trees twisted by loneliness
Eyes used to alien soil
Letters unopened.

16. μικρή λυπημένη μου θάλασσα (Mikri lipimeni mou thalassa)

My tiny poignant sea

The circle sealed off just here
And each one got half
And some fear apiece
A voyage in bad weather
With time its enemy
Was that all?

Once silence was enough
Now the much is hardly enough
Was that all?
Merely habits and motives
Stayed on to adorn two lives
That was all.

My tiny sad sea
Devoid of land and ripple
Once I remember I traded
A whole world so as to
Have you as fate.

I think Mario's singing is wonderful, I find it inspirational. His singing lifts my soul. I would like to hear him sing songs of Migael Rios and Waldo de los Rios and anything in Spanish.

he's touring the us this fall!! tix through ticketmaster - so far only shows are in Chicago, Detroit in Dec. and Tampa in Jan - but there are plans for many more - and much more to come from this talented singer!!

I am a recent convert of Mario Frangoulis. I agree he needs to be on Oprah and I have sent numerous emails to her. He has a singing voice that can break your heart in one song and send it soaring to he heavens with another song. He is unique in that this guy is the REAL DEAL and sincere and needs a BIG BREAK HERE IN THE USA. I hear he will be touring here this Spring (2006) Detroit, Boston, so far more are to be scheduled. Let us hope that more and more people here get to see and hear this marvelous talent. He is not to be missed by anyone he is that GOOD!!! And so beautiful looking as an added attraction.

Mario had such profound effect on me with his rendition of "So in Love" in the movie "De-Lovely". I revisited the movie so many time and kept going back to that song - It was Mario. Oh, how much I have fallen for him. I have been searching for his schedule and concert in the U.S. - Northeast. Please help anyone.

I discoverd Mario Frangoulis by chance just before his first album was released. I have been hooked ever since. He is better than Josh Groban and I don't tire of his voice as I do with Andreas Boccelli. He really deserves to get a big break.

Mario has a voice that melts my heart, as he does others I am sure. He deserves to be on Oprah and receive the pubic recognition that is long overdue. I feel fortunate to have met him and know he is a very warm and feeling person. I look forward to seeing him and visiting with him again soon.

I cried like a baby when I listened to his singing. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G RANGE! My fav. photo of him is posted here (arms crossed in the chair..that smile!!!)

He needs more U.S.A. exposure.

Glad this blog is going.
Yes, Oprah would just 'push' the boy to the top of the ultra-charts!

I've written Oprah.com twice today (Aug11,06). Once with my suggestion to have him on the show and supplied his website for her staff to see photos and listen to his various songs.

Second I supplied the following video links which will knock their socks off.

Dear Sirs & Madams:

Why this campaign will fail:

1. Mario Frangoulis is the best singer to come out of ANY country since Elvis Presley. He has "soul & feelings" when he sings (something Josh Groban lacks) as is known in many parts of the world. He makes his public live each song he sings.

2. The US and its public will be -- as usual -- among the last ones to recognize a foreigner as one of the best in the world. Case in point: The US has never recognized Mireille Mathieu (she is French -- and as good as or better than our Barbra.) I am not French, but I know TALENT when I see it and I hear it. I have been her fan since I was 17 years old.

3. In the mood this country is in now, the powers that be believe that, if anything, the US needs and American SENSATION that could help us forget the crude reality that is crushing us daily. Unfortunately, this country, for the past 30 years or so, has only produced MEDIOCRITY and there is no end in sight. It has adopted as many rhythms as it has been humanly possible, has mixed them, translated them, etc., and still: NOTHING. It will be a cold day in hell when the people of this country learn to RECOGNIZE that TRUE talent is UNIVERSAL, and does not have to be ALWAYS born in the United States. Wake up, US!!! Man does not live out of wars alone! Are you reading Oprah???

Stavros

P.S. I have every CD and video Mario has recorded. I do not speak his language, for I am not Greek either; but that does not keep me from recognizing his genius & uniqueness. I saw him in person, in concert, in Illinois, last December 2005. I took my 16-year old son to see him and his 50-year old Nanny. He left ALL of us speechless, even though he did not sing his best song (in my opinion) at the concert: "Hijo de la Luna." I have his music at home, in my computer, and in my car. I can even sing the Greek words to many of his songs, although I know not what they mean. S.Q.

I'd like to invite everyone to the new Yahoo community group I set up dedicated to MF, called The Frangoulis Fraternity. We talk about anything & everything that piques our interest, mostly about MF.
