Qox Populi . 01.31.06-02.06.06

Welcome to GuyTVBlog.com's newest edition to the post family, Qox Populi! Isn't it great to learn a new pop culture phrase? This creation was ripped from the MSN Encarta Dictionary's word, Vox Populi, which means "popular public opinion" or "voice of the people". Well I decided to turn the word queer [like i do most things! wink] by making you, the reader, pronance the word as "cox poppye lee". It's fun to talk dirty, teach your friends.
This is how Qox Populi will work. The post, dated every tuesday, will remain on on the front page during the week. After I watch a show or experience something pop culture related on tv, I will post about it under each month's weekly Qox Populi. Just visit GuyTVBlog.com all week to see how it works.
Oscar's Crash . I woke up early to catch the Oscar nominations live [7:30am Texas time] and was beyond ecstatic to hear that Crash was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay, Film Editing & Original Song! 6 fuckin' nominations, just 2 short of Brokeback Mountain's 8 noms.
Ever since I saw Crash months back I started telling everyone in my circle of friends and family that Crash was going for Best Picture this year at the Oscars. Growing up as a hispanic youth in Texas, prejudice was not as apparent as if I was living in Los Angeles but was presentient nonetheless.
I remain a closeted gay 20 something year old so growing up with homophobia was not a problem for me. Growing up racially segregated in school, in job atmospheres and social gatherings, I just relate more to a film regarding racisim. Yes the antics or situations within the film Crash may seem a bit over dramatized but it's a film about race well acted and well written. I do remember during school [And I'm sure this is how it was in most schools] you'd have a cafeteria table of asians, hispanics, caucasians, african americans, etc. This shouldn't be a memory for me but it was. I hate that memory. I, of course, sat with the nerds, the hot ones!
I'm actually looking forward to Crash taking the top prize away from Brokeback Mountain. The Oscars this year look far too predictable so I expect golden surprise after surprise. Either way, Brokeback & Crash deserve top honors. Here are my predictions as to who will win March 5th.
Best Picture: Crash
Best Director: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Best Actress: Charlize Theron, North Country
Best Supporting Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
Best Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
Original Screenplay: Crash, written by Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco
Adapted Screenplay: Brokeback Mountain, screenplay by Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana
Original Song: "In the Deep" (Crash), music by Kathleen "Bird" York & Michael Becker

Geek Warfare . On the 2nd season of The WB's Beauty and the Geek, we have an enjoyable, villainous jerk aka "Chris" paired with a highly sensitive thinks before she speaks beauty aka "Tristin" involved in a verbal confrontation with each other in this week's episode. Look I've got five minutes to waste and I'm just typing this out so bare with me.
In last week's episode the geeks and beauties were asked to meet up in a room upstairs as the host stepped in announcing that the geeks would be going away for the night leaving the ladies alone in the big reality house. The girls started shouting and the geeks starting high fiving each other [don't ask me why but the geeks high fiving is just odd] but then as the last geek "Josh" left the room, Tristin said outloud "Oh, now they bring in the beautiful men for the evening". Josh nodded his head in disbelief and walked out.
I thought, what a bitchy, cunty comment to make... period. I mean the geeks are already feeling like they can't ever live up to these girl's ideal of handsome and then this bitach makes a comment such as this. But wait, it gets better.

In the "next week" preview at the end of the episode, the geeks get makeovers and a newly groomed Chris goes out on a date with some new girl telling her "It's great to be able to talk to a smart girl ever once and awhile." Now the girls in the house are watching the guys on their dates and Tristin finds out Chris has said this and has an emotional outburst slash confrontation with Chris later that night yelling "I'm not unintelligent! And I am offended with someone calling me unintelligent!".
But wait Tristin, so it's perfectly okay to say the "bring in the beautiful guys" comment just days before yet it's not okay for Chris to call another girl "intelligent" inturn calling you [maybe indirectly] unintelligent. God I love reality tv show edited drama!
People on reality shows always start useless arguments when they should really look back at what they said just days before... but situations like this make for great tv.
Update: Damn it! I hated Thursday's episode because the jerk and the beauty lost the game. Tristin should've left the show with repeated blurred mouth add ins and never ending bleeps to the women of the house, especially to Sarah. I hope a twist brings them back into the game. Here's hoping!
